One relationship. Infinite possibilities. In how many universes would you love someone? Nick Payne’s Olivier award-winning Constellations is a play about free will and friendship; it’s about quantum multiverse theory, love and honey. Roland is a beekeeper. Marianne is a quantum physicist. What are their odds of falling in love? With infinite moments that can change the trajectory of a life, it’s anyone’s guess how cosmic collision is possible. This play moves from the question of “what if,” to a poignant picture of “what is.”

Marianne:

  • Female-presenting, 20s–40s (flexible). A quantum physicist with a sharp intellect and layered emotional life. Actor must navigate rapid shifts in tone, timeline, and emotional stakes. Navigates vulnerability, illness, and existential questions about choice and fate. Requires strong command of language, precision in repetition, and emotional range

Roland:

  • Male-presenting, 20s–40s (flexible). A beekeeper with grounded presence and emotional sincerity. Actor must balance stillness with depth across multiple realities. Requires strong listening skills, subtlety, and consistency across shifting realities

Sophie fights for her legal rights to inherit the home and accounts of her partner, Lena. Challenged by Lena’s mother, Lauren, the asexual nature of their partnership is called into question and put on trial. Load-Bearing Walls focuses on themes of romance, love, dignity in death, and the value that society places on sexual relationships.

Sophie:

Female, Plays ages 21–38, Any ethnicity. Open to cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary performers who are comfortable portraying a woman.

An artist and server who builds a life defined by tenderness, routine, and deep emotional connection. Sophie is thoughtful, quietly resilient, and emotionally perceptive. She carries both vulnerability and stubborn strength, particularly when forced to defend the legitimacy of her relationship.

Over the course of the play, Sophie ages nearly two decades, requiring an actor capable of portraying youthful optimism, mature partnership, grief, anger, and fierce determination.

Seeking an actor with strong emotional range, grounded realism, and the ability to navigate intimate shifts in time and memory.

Lena:

Female, Stage Age: 51, Plays ages 34–51, Any ethnicity.  Open to cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary performers who are comfortable portraying a woman.

Intelligent, observant, and dryly funny. Lena often minimizes herself outwardly while carrying deep emotional complexity beneath the surface. She is thoughtful and introspective, someone who experiences love through companionship, steadiness, and chosen intimacy.

Though absent in the present-day legal proceedings, Lena remains the emotional center of the play. Her scenes reveal the history of the relationship and the quiet architecture of a shared life.

Seeking an actor capable of warmth, subtle humor, introspection, and nuanced emotional depth.

Lauren:

Female, Stage Age: 77, Plays ages 60–77, Any ethnicity.

Lena’s mother. Former head of university admissions. Intelligent, articulate, composed, and deeply convinced of her own moral certainty. Lauren is not a caricature of cruelty; she is a woman shaped by generational expectations, grief, class, and control.

Lauren believes she is protecting something sacred, even when her actions wound others. The role requires an actor who can balance authority, vulnerability, denial, and emotional complexity.

Seeking an actor with strong command of language, emotional restraint, and layered dramatic instincts.
